The Fruit of the Spirit
Two weeks ago I spoke at University Village at their Sunday afternoon Vespers worship service. They are a great group and I love sharing the blessings of God in Christ with them. After the service one of the group said my sermon was great but asked why I did not speak about the Holy Spirit?
He is very important. The Spirit is the part of the Trinity that creates faith and moves within us to live out our lives of faith. The Holy Spirit is the one that produces the fruit described in this memorable passage from Galatians. We all need more love, joy, and especially patience after one of those days. Especially when stuck in traffic. I sometimes pray to the Holy Spirit to give me these blessings and it is the Holy Spirit that produces them in my life.
So why not mention the Holy Spirit more? I think it is because the face of God that we see is Jesus. Last Sunday I mentioned this passage from Job.
“He prays to God and finds favor with him, he sees God’s face and shouts for joy.” (Job 33:26)
The events of this week are so powerful because we hear Jesus speak in a wide variety of environments. Even more we can see his face when looking down from the cross, washing His disciple’s feet, and rising from the grave. My soul is filled with joy every year at this time hearing and reading the wonders of all that Jesus has done.
