Red Letter Day 6: Going the Extra Mile

“You have heard that it was said, `Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.” (Matthew 5:38-41)
Jesus said many things in his ministry that were shocking, and this passage is one of them. We have to admit that we are comfortable with the idea of an eye for eye, and a tooth for a tooth. We find that kind of justice fair and equitable. Turning the other cheek is not an easy word from Jesus. We have a tendency to take this to an extreme and become a doormat. That’s not what Jesus meant in this passage. He wants to make us people who challenge others in our relationships. There are things more important than getting your way or getting something for yourself. We sometimes sum that up with the expression “go the extra mile” which comes from this passage.
We never get what we deserve from God, we get incredible things. Jesus makes us heirs of heaven. In Christ we all are blessed in ways that we cannot even explain in words now. Forgiving, sharing, and being willing to walk with another speak with our actions the Gospel of Jesus.
