Red Letter Day 5: What a Friend We Have in Jesus
2015 Lent Blog
Sunday February 22
“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15)
This morning in Church we sang the hymn “What A Friend We Have in Jesus.” It made me think of this passage in John where Jesus calls us his friends. What is a friend? A while back a paper ran a contest to give the best definition of a friend. Here are some of the entries:
- “One who multiplies joys, divides grief, and who is always honest”
- “A volume of sympathy bound in skin”
- “A watch that beats true for all time and never runs down” but the winner was-
- “A friend is one who comes in, when the whole world has gone out”
I like that definition because it fits Jesus. He is always there. Even when everyone else has gone, Jesus is there. I am reminded of that each night when I close my eyes. He is the only one there interacting with my thoughts and I can hear him call me friend.
