Red Letter Day 32: Looking Forward

plowJesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
(Luke 9:62)

Jesus spoke these words to someone making an excuse to not follow him immediately. It is very easy to make an excuse not to do something and sometimes these are good excuses. This excuse was to say goodbye to his family. I think the better answer would have been let me get my family to also follow you. I have never plowed a field but the closest to this for me is I have mowed a field. One thing I have found is that to make a straight line and to do a good job you need to be looking where you are going. I imagine the same is true of plowing a field. Your line will be all over the place if you are looking backwards.

Faith is meant to be forward looking. Mistakenly, some think that faith is all about looking back to Jesus and sometimes critics of the church think we are looking back in time. I do think that is true in some people but faith is looking to the amazing things God is doing in the present as well as looking for the incredible things that God is going to do in the future. The disciples did not lament Jesus not being there in person after Pentecost but went out and carried on the ministry of Jesus all over the world. The same should be said of us and see the amazing things God is doing today.

In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Dave
