I Want To Follow You
“The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”
Today is April 15. It is tax day, although this year there is a reprieve until Monday April 18th because of some holiday in DC. It is also the day the Titanic sank. It is also the day Lincoln died after he was shot in the Ford Theater on the evening of April 14th. After living in Illinois for many years I have read a great deal about Lincoln. He was a heroic President in many ways and I doubt that he would shine in today’s political environment.
My favorite story about Lincoln is before his presidency he went to a slave auction and ended up purchasing a young women. When he first talked with her he said she was now free! He said, she could go wherever she wanted, and do whatever she wanted to do. After a while it sunk in about her freedom and the generosity of Lincoln and so her reply was “I want to go with you.”
Jesus quoted the words from Isaiah above in the synagogue as he began his ministry. He brings freedom and light to our lives and we can go wherever we want and do whatever we want to do. As I have come to know Jesus in many ways my reply to him is always, “I want to follow you.”
