Forty Days of Prayer – Day 7

Scripture has one great treasure trove of prayers and that is found in the book of Psalms. As I was running this morning the words of the Psalm 16 kept popping into my prayers.

“Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” (Psalm 16:5-11)

In this psalm David is praying and thinking both abut his earthly family but also about his heavenly family. Property was a great treasure that was passed on and kept through many generations. The boundary lines were marked with stones and one of the greatest crimes of the day was to move these boundary stones. Even when a family might lose its land the opportunity to get it back was mandated by God. David can think of his family being the youngest son of Jesse and his family tree that is mentioned in scripture.

Even more than the family and family land in Bethlehem, are the eternal promises that God makes here. Earthly life is seen as a part of the path of life that ultimately leads to joy and eternal pleasures at the right hand of God. There is even a promise of the Messiah, here called the “Holy One,” who will not experience the decay of death. In Christ we have a delightful inheritance that cannot be taken away from us. These words have great meaning today and I plan to share them with an older member of the Church, who yesterday found out that a daughter of hers is now at the right hand of God. Maybe the greatest hardship of growing very old is that you may outlive one of your children. Nothing I have seen people experience is harder than this. Yet still even greater than that sorrow, is the inheritance and blessing Jesus gives this day.

In Christ’s Service, Pastor Dave

Lord thank You for the delightful inheritance we have in Jesus. You have promised to stay by our side forever. In the end, You fill us with joy and eternal pleasures at Your right hand. Remind us today that You are always by our side today and forevermore, and in that we rest secure. Amen
