Devotion – September 22, 2015 – Tearing Down and Building Up

ephesians4_29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
—Ephesians 4:29

It can be so easy to join in with a little gossip or, when you are feeling annoyed/angry with someone, to go vent to a friend.  And, hey, what’s wrong with a crude joke here and there.  But that’s not what our mouths are intended for.  We have been made holy by blood of Christ, even our mouths.

Our mouths are intended for something so much greater.  Our words can speak the Word of God.  We can convey the love of Christ.  We can share words of comfort for those who are hurting.  We can build up those who are discouraged.  We can speak well of our neighbor or defend them when others say hurtful things about them.  We can speak the words of life found only in the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 4:29 isn’t just a command to watch what you say.  It’s also a message of opportunity.  We have the wonderful ability to, as the Toby Mac song puts it…speak life.

Dear Jesus,

You are the Word made flesh who came down and dwelt among us to life and die and rise again that we might have life.  Help our words to reflect Your Word that those who hear us will hear a message of hope, love, and life through You.
