Devotion – September 2, 2015 – Who Guides Us
There are lots of people trying to teach us about life. Parents, teachers, pastors, friends, the government, even TV shows and movies all are vying to teach us their perspective about life. Of course, the one who tries to guide and teach us about life more than anyone else is ourselves. We are constantly trying to figure things out, plan out our lives, decide right from wrong based on our logic, emotions, experiences, and knowledge. But who should we listen to? Who should we have teaching and guiding us?
The Bible passage for today tells us to look God. Ask the Lord to teach you and guide you. After all, He is not God, the maker and creator of all things, but He is our Savior in whom we place all our hope. He loves and and cares for us. It is to Him that we should look to learn and be guided.
This is one of those concepts, however, that most Christians agree on, but we all actually struggle with when it’s put into practice. This is easy when we read verses from the Bible we agree with. The difficulty comes when we read something that challenges our beliefs. Do we try to reinterpret the Scriptures to agree with our ways, do we ignore the passage, or do we allow God’s Word to change what we believe? I’ve heard it said that we shouldn’t interpret Scripture. Rather, we should allow Scripture to interpret us.
I encourage you to read the Bible regularly and, as you do, pray that the Lord would teach and guide you and that He would change you according to His Word knowing that His Word brings life and He has come to give you an abundant life.
Forgive me for the times I have ignored your Word or tried to twist the meaning to fit what I wanted it to say. I know that Your Word is truth and Your Word brings life. As I read Your Word each day and go through life, Show me Your ways, O LORD, teach me Your paths; guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long.
