Devotion – September 12, 2015 – Fix Your Eyes On Jesus

psalm10_14You, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
—Psalm 10:14

When we are suffering it can be easy to start to wonder whether God really sees our suffering or, if He does, whether He cares.  Why would God let this happen?  We don’t always understand why we suffer, but the Scriptures do promise us two things about suffering.  First, in this life we will suffer.  Second, God will be with us every step of the way, He will be our helper, and He will rescue us either here or in eternity.

Suffering is not an indication of God’s absence or indifference.  Suffering is a result of a sinful world, whether it’s suffering because of our own sins or suffering for the Gospel at the hands of a sinful world.  Thus was Jesus suffering.  This is what tripped up Israel.  They expected a glorious, mighty, warrior messiah, but Jesus came as a humble, weak, and suffering servant.  And that suffering servant now stands with you in your suffering.  He sees your trouble and grief and is your helper.

Dear Jesus,

Please be with me when I face suffering.  You are my help and my salvation.  Please, also, help me to be a helper for others who are suffering
