Devotion – October 27, 2015 – Hiding from God

isaiah29_15Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the LORD, who do their work in darkness and think, “Who sees us? Who will know?”
—Isaiah 29:15

It sounds a bit ridiculous when we say it, but we’ve all tried to hide our actions from God.  It usually starts with a temptation.  Instead of rejecting the temptation or praying about it, we start to think about it.  Thinking turns into planning.  As we think and plan about it, we stop praying.  We avoid it because we know if we pray, we will be standing before God with this plan hanging around our neck, plain for Him to see, and we’ll be guilty.

This isn’t unusual nor is it new.  When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, eating the fruit God had commanded them not to eat, what was the first thing they tried to do.  God came to walk and talk with them and they hid.  When God asked them why they were hiding they said they didn’t want Him to see them naked (they’d been naked since God created them).  We do the same.  We often try to hide because when we appear in the presence of the Holy God we are naked.  All our actions, thoughts, and motives laid bare before Him.

Of course, we cannot truly hide from God.  God knows all and sees all.  God knew Adam and Eve had sinned before He came looking for them.  Yet, He came.  God sees our sin or the sin we are planning and we can’t really hide it from Him.  But He still comes to us.  God didn’t see Adam and Eve’s sin and just smite them.  He slaughtered and animal to clothe them and gave them the promise of a savior.  God also comes to us with the promise of a Savior, Jesus Christ, and the forgiveness He brings.  Yes, there may still be consequences.  Adam and Eve had to leave the garden.  But God is always working to forgive and save and we can trust His promises.

So, when you sin, do not hide.  Instead, come before God and confess your sins knowing He will forgive you.  If you realize you are starting to plan sin, don’t avoid God.  He will give you the strength through His Word and Holy Spirit to fight that temptation.

Heavenly Father,

Please forgive me for the times I have hidden from You, thinking I could keep You from knowing my plans and my sin.  I come before You today laid bare for You see all things and know the hearts of men.  I confess my sins.  Please forgive me and renew me in the joy of my salvation.  Thank you for sending Your Son and for Your promise to forgive us and purify us of all our sin.
