Devotion – November 23, 2015 – The Righteousness of God

2corinthians5_21God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
—2 Corinthians 5:21

Wait, did I read that right?  I am the righteousness of God?  How can this be.  I know that I am sinful.  I can be unloving and unforgiving.  How can I be called the righteousness of God?

You may feel the same way, but we read this passage in 2 Corinthians and see it’s all in Christ.  Jesus, who had no sin, took our sin upon Himself.  He took our sin and died on the cross that we would be washed clean through His blood.  In Christ we have been forgiven and made perfect.  We have been given the righteousness of Christ, the sinless Son of God.  This righteousness is not of ourselves, we didn’t earn it; rather we have been clothed in His righteousness.  In Christ, you are flawless.

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for taking my sins and the punishment I deserve.  Thank You for forgiving me and purifying me of all unrighteousness.  Thank You for giving me Your righteousness.
