Devotion – August 6, 2015 – Take Courage!
But when they [the disciples] saw him [Jesus] walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
So, your out on Tampa Bay at night in boat and you see someone just walking by you. What would you think? For the disciples, it terrified them. They knew Jesus. They had heard His teachings and been told He is the Son of God. But that’s one of the things about God. There are times when you see even a small taste of God’s power and it’s amazing and terrifying. Often we like to think of the lovey-dovey, grandpa image of God because it’s safe, but God is the all-powerful creator and controller of all that is. We can’t even begin to fathom His awesome power. It can be very scary…
But God tells us, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” You see, God not only has unfathomable, awesome power, He also has unfathomable, awesome love. Love we cannot even begin to comprehend. It was His love that took Jesus to the cross for us. It is His love that gives us access through Jesus Christ to come boldly and confidently before Him. And it is His love which goes with us in awesome power as we life our life for Him.
So, take courage! As you go forth, don’t be afraid. God is with you. He loves you. And when serving Him causes us to face something that makes you afraid, remember that the God who walks on water, calms storms, heals the sick, and raises people from the dead is with you and take courage.
Thank you for loving me more than I could ever imagine. Thank you using your unfathomable power to save me from my sins. Forgive me for those times I doubt you can or will carry me through and give me the courage to go forth and serve you boldly knowing that you go with me.
