Devotion – August 13, 2015 – Let the Little Children Come to Me
People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
Children. They can be fun, annoying, cute, infuriating, funny, and tiring. One thing we definitely know about children, however, is that they matter to Jesus. They matter a lot. One of the few times we see Jesus get mad is when the disciples were trying to stop children from getting to Him. “He was indignant!”
And so we should not hinder children from Jesus. Jesus died for children, just like He did for adults. The Bible tells parents to raise up our children in the faith. We are to bring our children to Jesus, in His Word, in prayer, in our actions, in baptism, and in worship because Jesus wants to bless the little children.
One of the things I love most our the name of our church, Family of Christ, is that built right into our name is the idea that God’s church is not just for the parents, God’s church is for children, parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and even little brothers. I pray that our church and our individual lives always reflect this.
Thank you for loving children and desiring to bless them, just as you bless adults, especially with the gift of faith and salvation. Help us not to brush aside our children, but rather to love them and bring them to You.
