Who's Your Master?
“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”
Who or what is first in your life? Jesus is asking that question in this verse. The answer is of course, God is first in my life, but the one that is often chosen instead of God is money. There can be other things or people that come before God but the most common one that people place before God is money. That is why Jesus so often speaks of money. Why?
We all have to say that money is important. When paying bills every month you realize that. For most all of us there is not a surplus of money and we make decisions all the time about what we can and cannot do based on money. Money is not evil but the “love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” (1 Tim 6:10) When we love money it has become our master and the focus of our lives. Giving money away is a way of saying money is important but there is only one God and he is first and foremost in my life.
