Suffering In This Life
“Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
If you just have enough faith, you will get the house…car…blessings you’ve always desired. You will never get sick and never suffer. Just name it and claim it.
You may have seen messages like that out there, even coming from leaders of large churches. However, this is not what Lord promises in the Bible. In fact, we are told repeatedly that we will suffer:
“Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted”
-2 Timothy 3:12
It’s not the best sales line, is it? “Hey, believe in Jesus and you will suffer. Sign up, today!”
What we are promised, however, is that when we suffer, God will be there with us. He will “never leave us or forsake us,” (Hebrews 13:5), He will strengthen us (Philippians 4:13), and ultimately He will deliver us “to His eternal glory in Christ” (1 Peter 5:10). We also know that He suffered much more for us.
So, we need not fear suffering. Rather we endure it joyfully that God may be glorified and many may glorify His name, knowing that He will be faithful to give us the crown of life and we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
The idea of suffering scares me sometime. Yet, I know that suffering is part of this life and that through suffering You produce in me endurance and hope. You also work through my suffering to bring others to know You as Lord and Savior. Help me to trust You in the suffering, knowing that You suffered much more to bring us salvation. Keep me faithful to the end that I may receive the crown of life.
