Red Letter Day 40: The Stones Will Cry Out

2015 Lent Blog

Sunday March 29

stones“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
(Luke 19:40)

There are times when you want to shout. Jesus said these words on Palm Sunday. Some were criticizing him for the noise his disciples and the huge crowd were making as Jesus entered Jerusalem. They asked Jesus to tell the crowd to stop shouting and cheering and to be quiet. That is when Jesus said these words. Someone or something needs to shout in joy for the Prince of Peace has entered into Jerusalem his destination.

His entrance was not as grand as some of the Roman Caesar’s of the day. History records that Julius Caesar had a golden chariot pulled by 40 elephants on one return to Rome, a while before this entry. Jesus came on a Donkey, a symbol of peace. This morning we had a donkey at Family of Christ. We tried to get him to enter the church but he pulled back. The crowd and the noise were a little frightening. Jesus came to Jerusalem with the cross on the horizon and he did not retreat or stop, because he knew his mission and purpose was the cross. That is why this week stands out above all other week, and even the stones want to cry out.
