Red Letter Day 27: Take Courage
2015 Lent Blog
Monday March 16
These words were spoken by Jesus when the disciples saw him walking on the water in the middle of the night. They were half asleep and terrified. Who could walk on the water? This passage brings memory of Job 9:8 where Job says of God, “He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.” After these words, then Jesus gets in the boat and the wind and the sea quiets.
I am fascinated with the idea of taking courage. Sometimes we think someone is courageous or not. But what Jesus wants to teach the disciples here is that with him they are meant to be courageous. I love the story of the little boy after seeing the circus was asked what he wanted to do in life. I want to be a lion tamer, he said. Of course I will have my mommy with me. This moment is the first time the disciples began to understand that even when they were alone in the middle of the sea, they were not separated from the power and blessing of Jesus. That is ultimately is what gave the disciples courage in the even rougher seas of life. Jesus says the same to each and every one of us.
