unnamed(13)“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
(Matthew 11:28-30)

Jesus used the simple images of his day when he taught and many of these examples were agrarian. We have seen that the last couple of days with sheep, and today’s passage uses a yoke and oxen as a metaphor for the Christian life. I can think of no more brutal backbreaking work than pulling a plow. I have seen this attempted by an individual in a movie once and it was not an easy accomplishment. In fact nothing could be harder. That is why this passage is so counter intuitive when Jesus calls to all of the weary and burdened. Take his yoke upon you and then your burden is light.

In fact the most common way for a plow to be pulled was a yoke with two oxen. My mental picture of this passage has me standing shoulder to shoulder with Jesus, and where he goes, I also go. Jesus has a way of carrying our burdens and what he is asking here is that we walk side by side with him in faith. Everything done in faith with Jesus is easier. In fact the impossible is possible. He is the one place where you can find rest and peace for your eternal soul.
