Red Letter Day 13: I Am
2015 Lent Blog
Monday March 2
“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
When Jesus said these words many in the crowd tried to kill Jesus by stoning him. What would make you so angry that you would want to take the life of someone else? The first answer to this question is if someone was threatening physical harm to you or anyone you care about. This is self defense and everyone can understand that situation. What so enraged the religious leaders of the day that they plotted to kill Jesus? It was not a threat to their safety but the words that Jesus had spoken and nothing was more provocative than the “I Am” statement of Jesus.
This was the name of God that God gave Moses at the burning bush when he asked what should he tell the children of Israel was the name of God. In fact Jesus uses this name many times in the scriptures to help us understand who he is. He had the power to forgive sins only because he is God. He had the power to stop the wind and the waves because he is God. He has the power to change your life today because he is the Son of God who made you, died for you, and promises to be with you always.
