Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22: 34-40)
Jesus spoke these words when being tested by the Pharisees and an expert in the law. A sign of truly understanding something is being able to put it in a plain simple explanation. When hearing this answer, where is the main focus? Loving God. In fact it is supposed to be with all of our heart, soul, and mind. The events of this week speak to these three part of who we are. Good Friday speaks to my heart. Greater love has no one than this, laying down your life for another. Jesus died for me and He speaks to my heart. Easter speaks to my soul, to the eternal. There is a part within us that that contemplates eternity, we cannot fathom all that God has done, but Easter speaks to the reality and promise of eternity, that our soul’s grab on to. My mind is engaged when I read of all the challenges and answers that Jesus made during these last few days. He always said the right thing. No one ever could give a better answer because Jesus knows everything. It is important to remember all of that as we go through this difficult season. Our usual diversions like sports, social gatherings, and for some even losing work make these days different and fearful. Yet God has a way of always making the most of a bad situation. Make the most of this time and look up in faith. Jesus is here to engage your heart, soul, and mind. In Christ’s service, Pastor Dave
