I have been reading through the Psalms this week and this verse stuck out in my mind. Here David speaks to “gods” about the Lord and His unfailing love.
I will praise you Lord with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise. I will bow down toward your holy temple and praise your name for your unfailing love and for your faithfulness.” (Psalm 138:1-2)
Our Old Testament reading this week has the 10 commandments. One of them, that is not emphasized as much in the world today is having no other gods before the one and only GOD. David in this Psalm speaks to any person or thing that people elevate to the level of a god. This could be idols, things, or even the highest power in the land, which in this case would be him because David was the King. He knew he was nothing when compared to the Lord and he knew his failures all too well.
I think we all need to look at everything in life with this kind of perspective. If you are getting full of yourself compare yourself to Jesus, he lived out unfailing love. When that favorite thing you have, maybe your house or a car, takes your heart off of who you are in Jesus, compare the two. Jesus compared with anything in the entire universe is no comparison at all.
