I am going to go back to continue with John 15 after yesterday’s reflection on Billy Graham.
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. (John 15: 13-15)
There are two powerful messages here. First that the greatest love you can give another is giving up your life for them. That is just what Jesus has done. He told Peter to put down the sword because he was not to fight against Jesus being arrested. Jesus went to the cross because he planned to give his life for each of us. He laid it down because of love.
The second is that Jesus three times here calls us His friends. What do you think of when you think of your friends? I think of someone who is always there, someone who loves you as you are, and even more someone who shares with you their personal issues and struggles. Jesus shares in such a way with us because we are His friends. That is a kind of love we have from Jesus that is hard to imagine from the Son of God who made all things, but as a friend He gives it to us. Amen.
