One of my favorite challenges to give to the Confirmation class is to have them give different names of Jesus from the Bible. The group record was 71 that a class two years ago came up with. There are about 105-110 by most New Testament scholar’s opinion. This second to the last verse of 1 John has one that was in yesterday’s passage.
We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true–even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.(1 John 5:20)
The name is Eternal Life. Jesus is called the Way, the Truth, and the Life in the 14th chapter of the Gospel of John. Sometimes names are given that express a truth about someone. Nicknames are often used in this way. If you call a kid “slugger” I hope it is because of a love of baseball. Jesus is life but also eternal life because he breaks the wall of death in his own life and every time he encountered people grieving in scripture. That promise is meant for every one of us. If you want to be challenged, try to see how many names you can come up with?
The verse above is loaded: Son of God, True (truth), Jesus, Christ, True God, and Eternal life.
In Christ’s Service,
