Freed to Serve – Sermon Follow-Up

romans7_6But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
—Romans 7:6

This last Sunday we finished up our sermon series, Invited, as we talked about how we are invited to be free.  God has freed us from the bondage of sin, both the guilt of sin and the power of sin.  The Son has set us free and if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed!

However, we were not just freed from something, we were freed for something.  Romans 7:6 described it this way, you were bound by the Law (trying to follow rules to earn God’s blessings), but you are now freed from that.  Now you serve God, not out of obligation, but by the Spirit.  In other words, the Spirit of God moves in us, changing us and transforming us so that we desire to do the good works of God, serving Him and serving others.

“For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
-Philippians 2:13

These are not works which earn us salvation or righteousness before God, we already have that by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.  Rather, these are good works born of the Spirit done out of our love and gratefulness to God.

Dear Jesus,

Thank You freeing us.  I could never have become righteous by following Your commands.  I just can’t keep them perfectly.  But You have freed us from the Law.  You fulfilled the Law completely in Christ and have given us a new life.  Help us to serve You and serve others, sharing Your love with everyone we meet.

Amen
