Forty Days of Prayer March 11, 2013

As I sat at my computer this morning to start this message on prayer and I was unsure of what to write about.  So I did what I sometimes do, I googled it.  I googled prayer to see what would come of the search, prayer.  There were about 295,000,000 hits with that search. The first thing that came up was a paid web site  This site claimed they would have 1000’s of people praying for you, but with one catch, you needed to have a valid credit card ready to be used.   I felt very disgusted and angry.  It made me think of this verse.

He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. (Revelation 21:6)

There is nothing in life that is free.  If you get something for free it is because someone is picking up the tab and making it possible.  There is no free lunch.  What about prayer?  One of the more prominent aspects of prayer we have not talked about during these past few weeks is praying in the name of Jesus.   One way of looking at praying in Jesus name is that it reminds us that He himself paid the price.  He wants us to pray with the confidence and boldness of Jesus because he has paid for everything.  He teaches us to pray abba father because of His relationship.  He shares that with us each time we pray.

This passage from Revelation talks about the spring of the water of life from heaven.  It comes free and without any cost to us.  That is because it is provided by God.  It is a gift just like our salvation that Jesus gives to us. The air you breath may be free from your perspective but it is in reality a gift of God.  The same can be said of prayer.  The intimate and powerful prayer that Jesus taught is available because He paid the price.  That is why He told us to pray in His holy name.

In Christ’s Service,  Pastor Dave

Dear Lord, thank you for the gift of prayer.  Thank you that it is free for us.  Thank you that we can pray in the name of Your Son Jesus, because He has paid the price for everything that costs. This is the price which we cannot afford in His life and death. We thank you and we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
