Eat a Peach – New Testament Thursday
Revelation was initially written to seven churches that John cared for in present day Turkey. All these churches were about a days walk apart and this was probably the first circuit in the history of the church. I imagine John would make this loop every so often and spend a day at each site. The message is very particular to each place and John always ended with a different promise of good things from God. A few weeks ago I preached on Laodicea the last of the seven, and the final promised blessing was getting to sit on the throne of God with Jesus in Revelation 3:21. Here the promise is to eat from the Tree of Life that is in paradise, and to be with God.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom has a giant Tree of Life but it is not real and it does not have any fruit. All too often I see picture of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil being an apple tree (the scriptures never imply that). I do not know what kind of tree it was and maybe we have never eaten it’s fruit. Eating from the Tree of Life is the promise that we are back in paradise. And yes we do eat in paradise. The scriptures use imagery in many different ways of heaven and one that is very common is a great feast with the best you have ever had in food and drink. So what kind of fruit would you image for the Tree of Life? I like a fresh peach, right off the tree. The flavor just explodes, but what I always know is that God has something better planned.
