Devotion – October 22, 2015 – All Things are Possible
Jesus had just come down from the mount and the transfiguration (Mark 9:2-13) and there was a man who had a demon possessed son. He longed for his son to be free of the demon and healed. The disciples who had not gone up with Jesus had tried to cast the demon out, but failed. Now, who had come with great hope for his son to be freed was shaken. Was it possible, even for Jesus?
Jesus’ first response, “If you can?” reveals the father’s lack of faith, something we often share. Jesus’ second response gives the father hope. The Father responds, “I believe. Help my unbelief.” Even though the father’s faith was weak, he had faith and he had Jesus. Jesus is the ultimate one who believes. For him all things are possible.
Sometimes we doubt. We doubt whether God could really love us, whether God would really forgive ALL our sins, whether God can free us from the sins we struggle with. We may not be possessed by a demon per se, but we wonder if God can free us from our demons. We, too, can call out to Jesus for help even when we doubt, saying, “I believe. Help my unbelief.” And we can know all His promises are true and He is more than able to free us from any sin which entangles us. All authority in heaven and on earth have been given to Him.
I struggle with sin and I struggle with doubt. I confess that I am a sinner and ask for Your forgiveness. I also ask for You to help me with the sins I struggle with each day. Sometimes I question whether You can free me from these sins, but You tell me in Your Word that You can. I believe. Help my unbelief.
