Devotion – October 16, 2015 – His Greatness and Holiness

ezekiel38_23I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
—Ezekiel 38:23

Christianity, today, talks a lot about God as Father, friend, and savior.  We like to talk about love and closeness we have with God.  This is all very true, but at the same time we must always remember that God is…well…God.  His greatness is beyond anything we have ever seen or could even imagine.  And he is holy and pure unlike anything we have ever experienced.  It is in the light of God’s holiness that we will see our sin for what it really and even our good works are like filthy rags.

When Christ returns and God fully reveals his greatness and holiness it will be both an awesome and terrifying day.  He will come in judgment, a truly terrifying thing for those who do not know Him and who still stand in their sins.  For those who do know Him, who have been called to faith, this will be a glorious day!  We can trust in God’s promise that through faith in Jesus we have been washed in His blood and all our sin has been removed.  We have been made truly righteous.  We are a holy people…His people.  You can be confident in this because it is not based on your works, but on Christ’s promise and He is true to His promises.

Heavenly Father,

I cannot even begin to imagine Your greatness and holiness.  Were I to stand before You without Christ, I would surely be consumed.  But through Christ’s death and resurrection You have purified me and made me holy.  And so I pray along with Your servant John at the end of the book of Revelation, “Amen.  Come, Lord Jesus.”
