Devotion – November 20, 2015 – Even When We Suffer, God Is Faithful
Paul suffered a lot. He was stoned, ship wrecked, imprisoned for years, his friends turned against him, and he had what he referred to as a “thorn in the flesh” which God would not remove. With all this suffering, many people would either curse God or figure they had done something wrong to anger God. Many would be ashamed of their situation (how would you feel being imprisoned and having your friends abandon you?). Yet, Paul knows that his suffering is for Christ so he has nothing to be ashamed of. He also knows the promise we have in Jesus of eternal life with Him and knows that, though others have abandoned him, God has not. God is faithful!
When we face suffering, it can be easy to fall into despair. But do not despair. Have hope! God will not abandon you. God is faithful. He has called you by name and has promised you life and salvation. He is faithful, even in suffering. Know that you can entrust God with every part of your life and know that He will guard you and be faithful to His promises.
Sometimes life gets hard and I feel like I have lost all hope. Remind me of Your promises, promises to work all things for good, to protect and defend me, to always be with me, to forgive me, and to bring me into eternal life with You. And with those promises in mind, help me to follow You and entrust all things to You.
