Devotion – May 10, 2015 – Modeling Christ
You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers…
—1 Thessalonians 1:6-7
On Mothers day we honor and thank our mothers and grandmothers. One of the most blessed gifts (and at times challenges) mothers have is being able to model Christ for their children. We all have the opportunity to model Christ for anyone who comes into our lives.
People cannot see Jesus in the flesh today, but they can see Jesus…in you. Often times when we think of evangelism we think of speaking the Gospel to someone, but more often than not, the first way we evangelize is by people seeing Jesus in our lives.
As referenced in 1 Thessalonians, Paul and his companions had come to Thessalonica and proclaimed the Gospel to the people. They faced persecution when they did this, but instead of backing down, they imitated Christ as they were willing to suffer for the Gospel. Then, even though they knew they would suffer too, the Thessalonian people joyously received the Gospel and shared it will others. They not only heard the Gospel from Paul, but they saw Jesus in his life as well.
You, too, are called to be imitators of Christ:
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
In this way you bring Jesus to everyone you meet, even before you ever speak a word of the Gospel.
Heavenly Father, Thank you for sending your son as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Help me share Jesus with others not only in the words I say, but in the life I live.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt Steinbrueck
