Devotion – December 21 2015 – A Generous Heart
When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
Many of us are facing financial struggles or have faced them in the past. When we are struggling to make ends meet, every little bit helps. However, when we are facing these difficult times we can get into a mindset that we can’t give anything away. Our sense of generosity can get swallowed up by a survival mindset where we have to hold onto everything.
What we see here in Deuteronomy is God telling the Israelites that as they enter the Promised Land, they should be generous with their goods, specifically their crop. This isn’t just because it helps those in need, which it does, but rather it brings us back to the source of all we have…our great provider. God is the one who provides all things for us. This is one of His many gifts to us and He asks that out of His great generosity to us, we be generous to others. He asks that, instead of clinging to everything we can, we cling to Him and we trust that He will continue to provide when we give generously.
You have given me so much. You provide for a place to live and food to eat. Even more, You gave Your Son for me so that I could be forgiven and made Your child. Please give me a generous spirit. Help me to love others as You have so generously loved me.
