Devotion – August 27, 2015 – Many Parts, One Body
For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
Romans 12:4-5 NIV
Yesterday morning I woke up with my right hand swollen between my thumb and forefinger. It was soar and I couldn’t grip much of anything. I spent the rest of the day trying to do things without using my right hand and I’m right-handed. Even the simplest of everyday tasks became difficult and everything took twice as long. I honestly hadn’t thought much about that part of my body before that day, but man did I miss it when I couldn’t use it.
Our bodies have many parts and they each serve a purpose. For the body to work at optimum performance and efficiency, all the body parts need to be working properly. When one stops working, it makes things a lot more difficult and possibly even threatens our life.
The church is much like a body. There are lots of people, but we don’t all have the same skills, the same personality, or the same purpose…and we shouldn’t. If we did, the church would be very limited. This is great news because it means that we don’t all have to try to be the same. It’s also a great responsibility, because it means that if we don’t act to use our skills and personality to fulfill our purpose, we can’t just expect that someone else can fill in no problem.
God has gifted each of us uniquely. He has called each of us to serve Him in a special way. Let us serve Him happily and serve together encouraging and supporting each other.
Thank you for the church and thank you for the gifts and abilities you have given me. Help me to faithfully serve you in the church, at work, and at home that You may be glorified and others be saved.
