Pastor’s Blog – Hurricane Irma and this Weekends Services

A few weeks ago our Gospel reading included these verses.

When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.  But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”  “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”  Matthew 14:26-31

At times like these with Irma approaching our eyes are upon the wind much like Peter.  I have watched the weather more in the last five days than I have over the last 6 months. I was very worried a few days ago about this storm passing through the Keys into Gulf as a huge storm.  At this point it looks as if we may be spared the ferocious nature of this storm if it does pass up along the Atlantic coast northward. Miami looks to be getting hit hard and the whole I-95 corridor.  If that does happen, we may well be one of the evacuation zones for much of the east coast of Florida.  However, keep your eyes on the weather updates and be safe.  The worst of everything looks to be Sunday evening for us.

If the storm does stay east we will have the three services this weekend and we will pray for those who are facing the winds and the rain of Irma as well as the people of Texas who have experienced their own extreme flooding.  This passage from Matthew reminds us that our eyes of faith also need to be upon Jesus.  Our sermon series this month is upon people and things worth fighting for and this week we consider individuals and pray for those feeling alone in the struggles of the world in every realm, especially the storms of the last few weeks.  Special events at church this weekend are postponed until next weekend such as: Youth breakfast, Sunday School Teacher installation, and the Thrivent  group sponsoring the youth breakfast. Stay safe this weekend and know Jesus is always watching you and ready to reach out his hand to you.

Praying with Jesus: Make Time to Pray

I used this verse with the students at School this week to talk about today’s walkathon.

“Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:30-31)

I just finished the School walkathon and did 11 laps around our nature trail. The trail is .52 miles long. If you have never walked the trail, please walk it sometime after church. There are exercise stations as well as inspirational prayer passages printed along the route. One of the keys to powerful prayer is figuring out ways that incorporate prayer into your daily routine. The greatest roadblock to prayer is becoming too busy or preoccupied with other things to even make time to pray. Prayer by its very nature is putting your hope in the Lord. You will find that even if your life is moving faster than you would like that time in prayer will energize everything you do, so that you do not grow weary and maybe even soar.

Lord, help me to make time for you in prayer. May I see daily moments to bring all things and every part of myself to you in times of prayer. Living with and for you brings refreshment for my soul and joy to every part of life. Help me soar on wings like an eagle. Amen.
