Can You Hear God Call?

One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.””
-1 Samuel 3:1-4

Every time I read this passage I am reminded of a story I heard. It was back in the days of the telegraph. A job opened up for a new telegraph operator and many people applied for the job because it would be one of the highest paying jobs in town. Interviews were set for 9:00 A.M. Monday morning. 20 people were waiting for an interview when one young man arrived late and signed in.

Suddenly he got up and went into the office and 5 minutes later he came out and the manger announced that the job had been filled. Many complained why not interview them? He said the telegraph had been clicking, “if you understand this message come into the office immediately.” He was the only one to hear the message and go into the office.

Can you hear God call? Samuel did in this passage in a way that changed his life and the lives of all in the nation. God calls us in many ways. We can hear the words of scripture that speak to our lives. Look Jesus in the eye and his message and call to follow me will change your life. The Spirit of God whispers to our souls as to who we really are and what life is meant to be. Read, look, and listen to God and you will hear his call in a unique way.
