Who Is Greater?

john3_30He must become greater; I must become less.
-John 3:30

One of the things I’ve noticed over the years raising my daughter is how much her world revolves around her.  She wants to know everything that’s going on around her.  When someone gets something, she wants to know she can have it.  When someone tells a story, she immediately relates it to something about herself.

This is a normal thing for a child, but the truth is we don’t change that much as we grow up.  Even as adults we often put ourselves in the center of everything. [Read more…]

I Don’t Need Your Advice!

659315_5ba9794c89_z“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.”
-Proverbs 12:15

Taking other people’s advice can be hard.  We like to think we can handle things, that we most thing figured out and what we don’t know, we can figure out as we go.  I recently installed a toilet at my house.  I could have just opened up the box and started at it, but I decided to stop for a moment, go online, and find a video showing me how to replace a toilet.  Could I have figured it out myself?  Maybe.  But when I thought about the pain it would be if I got it wrong, I knew I’d better get some advice. He Has Set Eternity In Our Hearts

2330092285_2e1ceecd60_z“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
-Ecclesiastes 3:11

We are in the season of Easter and I love this verse from Ecclesiastes. God has set a desire to know the future and a wonder of time, of eternity into our hearts. We want to know the mysteries of creation, the future of all things, and see what God will do. That is why the victory over death that Jesus brought at Easter speaks to this yearning in our souls. Linens and Things

3468431784_011dfca179_z“Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.”
-John 20:6-7

Of all the things described in the Easter account, this is a particularly interesting one.  They could have just said the Jesus wasn’t in the tomb or that all they saw were the linen cloths and shroud (face cloth), but they describe in such detail that the linens and shroud were folded and laid separately.

So, why is that detail included?

Jesus tomb was blocked by a stone and guarded by Roman guards.  If someone was going to try to steal the body of Jesus, they most likely would have taken the body in it’s burial clothes for the sake of cleanliness, both physical and spiritual.  If, for some reason they took the body out of the burial clothes, they would have probably discarded them hastily as they made their escape.  With Jesus’ resurrection, His burial linens were still there as was the face cloth and they were folded neatly showing no signs of haste.

This detail is just one more part of the account that shows us the miracle of Christ’s resurrection and helps us, as we read the account, to be able see it even more vividly in our mind, see the empty tomb, and believe; just as the disciples saw the empty tomb and believed.

He is risen!

He Is Risen!!

1peter1_3“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,”
-1 Peter 1:3

He is risen!!

Today we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Today we celebrate the victory of Jesus over death and hell.  Today, we celebrate a celebration that will never end. [Read more…]

Made Alive

ephesians2_4-5As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved.
-Ephesians 2:1-5

Saturday of Holy Week is an unusual day. Nothing of significance happens in the Scriptures. During the day light hours it was the Sabbath and so the disciples were resting. It is not until Easter morning that some go to care for the body of Jesus. What struck me this week was how did Peter react to hearing the Roosters on Saturday morning? [Read more…]

Good Friday

hammer-nails-and-crownBut he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
-Isaiah 53:5

Good Friday

Pierced by nails driven into his body, his body bleeding out and no one would tend to his wounds. He was crushed by the weight of the sins of every human being who even lived (or ever will live). These he willingly took upon his own sinless body. He was wounded by being whipped and beaten by the soldiers, who then pressed a crown of thorns on his head.

… if that wasn’t enough, [Read more…]

The Big Cover Up!

1john1_9“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”
-Proverbs 28:13

I heard a speaker the other day talking about an incident form his childhood. He had been playing in a room where he wasn’t supposed to play. It was the room his Mom kept her Hummel figurines. While playing he accidentally knocked one of figurines off its shelf and it fell and broke. He immediately realized how much trouble he was in, so he tried to put the figuring back on the shelf and put the pieces just right so it would look like nothing happened. [Read more…]

The Fruit of the Spirit

galatians5_22-23“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Against such things there is now law.”
-Galatians 5:22-23

Two weeks ago I spoke at University Village at their Sunday afternoon Vespers worship service. They are a great group and I love sharing the blessings of God in Christ with them. After the service one of the group said my sermon was great but asked why I did not speak about the Holy Spirit? [Read more…]

arrested“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.”
-James 2:10

The thing about breaking some things is that when they’re broken, they’re broken. Not just a part of them, but all of them. This is true whether it’s an egg, a window, a truce, a resolution, a promise or God’s Law.

In the case of God’s Law, James point is that if you break one law, then you are a law breaker. [Read more…]
