Lies, Rumors, and Deceit

3221825218_57c9b55590_o“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
-Exodus 20:16

As Martin Luther would say, “What does this mean?”

“We should fear and love God that we may not deceitfully belie, betray, slander, or defame our neighbor, but defend him, [think and] speak well of him, and put the best construction on everything.”
-Lutheran Small Catechism

So, you want to sell your car.  You’d like to get $5000 which is roughly what BlueBook says it’s worth…in excellent condition.  So, you put the ad on Craig’s List with a glowing description…which would have been more accurate 3 years ago.  The problem is you know there’s an issue with A/C and the transmission slips a bit in  higher gears.  But it’s winter and what are the chances whoever test drives the car will get it up to 5th gear? Peace Beyond Our Understanding

philippians4_6-7“And the Peace of God, which transcends all human understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

What is your definition of peace? Peace is more than quiet. The peace of God is bigger than we can understand. Why is this? Because God is bigger and wiser than we can understand. The peace of God speaks to your hearts and minds in the present and it will continue to speak even in the most difficult days in your future. You do not know what they will be, but God always does. You Shall Not Steal

23932676519_c2639b1b17_o“You shall not steal.”
-Exodus 20:15

You can steal someone’s thunder or their heart. You can steal a base in baseball or even steal away with the one you love. Of course, these are not the types of stealing meant in Exodus 20:15.

Back when the Ten Commandments were written, “You shall not steal” meant to take the material possessions (money, clothes, cattle, etc.) of someone without their consent. There were lots of ways to do that – robbery, burglary, pickpocketing, sheep stealing, cattle rustling, etc. [Read more…]

Free To Do Good

2corinthians9_8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
-2 Corinthians 9:8

How many times have you had a list of things you really wanted to, but you just had too many things that HAD to be taken care of that you didn’t have the time or funds to do the things you really wanted to do?  Wouldn’t it be so much easier if all those things you HAD to do were already done for you so you were free to do what you really wanted to do? I _____ Take You, ______ To Be My Wedded…

471935995_eb849734c1_z“You shall not commit adultery.” (Exodus 20:14)

One of the special events that I get a front row seat to as a Pastor, are weddings. In fact I am usually standing about two feet away from the Bride and Groom as they exchange their vows and proclaim before their friends and family their promise of love and faithfulness. I have seen uncontrollable tears with the joy of the moment as well as a look of terror knowing that you have hundreds of eyes and ears fixed upon your every movement and word. Sadly these public promises are not always kept. In fact marriage vows are broken and sometimes people think that is the way it is in this age of no fault divorce. [Read more…]

You Preserve My Life

14110628626_4df104f113_z“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me.”
-Psalm 138:7

Life preservers, fire extinguishers, emergency window breaker/seat belt cutters, thermal blankets and other inventions have been created for the purpose of saving or preserving lives. They are designed to help us when we walk, swim, climb, drive or fall in the midst of trouble. [Read more…]

To Forgive…or to Murder?

4704953402_631194c066_z“You shall not murder.”
-Exodus 20:13

When we first read the 5th Commandment here, it seems pretty simple.  Don’t murder.  Great, finally a Commandment I can say I haven’t broken.  Though, I have to admit, there were a few times I came pretty close while driving around town.  And then there was that kid who picked on me middle school.  Well, and there’s that girl whose always going on about her perfect kid and she has grating voice… [Read more…]

Born of God

2561252071_0af988f93f_z“We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.”
-1 John 5:18

At first glance this passage stretches the mind. Who are the subjects of anyone born of God, the one who was born of God, and him? I think the best way to answer that is: me, Jesus, and me. We have all been born of God by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that we confess Jesus is Lord. This gives new life directed by the Spirit. Are we sinless? No. But when we do sin the Spirit convicts us in our hearts and we turn to God in repentance. We stop and do not continue to sin. Then we look to Jesus our Savior and He forgives. [Read more…]

Do NOT Mock Your Mom or Dad!

4605621230_89213e53b8_z“The eye that mocks a father, that scorns an aged mother, will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley, will be eaten by the vultures.
-Proverbs 30:17

Wow! When you first read this, it honestly sounds really scary and gruesome, doesn’t it? But, what this piece of scripture really has to do with is that it is a warning about not honoring your father and mother.

So, why are ravens pecking out eyes? It has to do with dying a violent death and being left out in the open, rather than being buried in an honorable way by your loved ones. [Read more…]
