Devotion – June 26, 2015 – The Seed

mark4_26-27And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
-Mark 4:26-29

How does the Kingdom of God grow?  We often feel responsible for growing the Kingdom of God, but Jesus is telling us that we don’t do the growing, that’s His job.  After all, it is “God’s” kingdom, not ours.  We can surely spread the seed of the Gospel, but it is God who works through His Word to create faith and grow His Kingdom. Devotion – June 23, 2015 – The Reward of I’ll Gotten Gains

proverbs10_2Ill-gotten treasures are of no value, but righteousness delivers from death.
—Proverbs 10:2

Have you ever been tempted to cut a few corners to make a few extra bucks or maybe not mention something negative when selling something.  A few years ago there was a man named Bernie Madoff who pretended to be a brilliant invester, but who was actually running a ponzi scheme.  He made millions while many people lost all their savings.  In Bernie’s case, he was caught and is now spending life behind bars.  Though not all dishonest people get caught.  Is it just a question of whether you get caught or not? Devotion – June 22, 2015 – Teaching our Children

psalm34_11Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
—Psalm 34:11

One of the greatest blessings and greatest responsibilities for adults, especially parents, is to raise their children in the faith.  Even if you aren’t a parent, you can still bring Christ into the lives of the children you know.  In Psalm 34, the psalmist talks about teaching.  Teaching is one way we raise our children in the faith, but sharing Bible stories, teaching lessons from the Word and, most importantly, telling them about Jesus. Devotion – June 21, 2015 – According to the Grace of our God

2thessalonians1_12We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
—2 Thessalonians 1:12

What a high and excellent goal that the name of the Lord Jesus be glorified in us, in every aspect of our lives.  And here’s the wonderful truth of that, that we find our glory in in Christ.  We do not find glory or righteousness in doing the right thing, avoiding temptation, or saying the perfect thing.  We find our glory and righteousness in Christ alone as a gift according the grace of God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Devotion – June 20, 2015 – Born of Water and the Spirit

john3_5Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.”
—John 3:5

We live in an age where there are lots of ideas of how to be saved or how to get to heaven.  Some say we just have to be a good person, others say all religions will get you there, and still some others say we’ll all end up in heaven eventually no matter what.  But Jesus tells us something different.  In John 14:6 He says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”  There is only one way to salvation and that is through faith in Jesus. [Read more…]
