Red Letter Day 42: That They May Be One

2015 Lent Blog

Tuesday March 31

group-hands“As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
(John 17:18-23)

Red Letter Day 41: No One Will Take Away Your Joy

2015 Lent Blog

Monday March 30

unnamed(23)Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, `In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
(John 16:19-22)

Sunday March 29

stones“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
(Luke 19:40)

There are times when you want to shout. Jesus said these words on Palm Sunday. Some were criticizing him for the noise his disciples and the huge crowd were making as Jesus entered Jerusalem. They asked Jesus to tell the crowd to stop shouting and cheering and to be quiet. That is when Jesus said these words. Someone or something needs to shout in joy for the Prince of Peace has entered into Jerusalem his destination. [Read more…]

unnamed(21)“My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Red Letter Day 36: The Prodigal’s Brother

2015 Lent Blog

Wednesday March 25

unnamed20“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. `Your brother has come,’ he replied, `and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, `Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ “`My son,’ the father said, `you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'”
Luke 15:25-32
