Forty Days of Prayer – Day 16

In one of my earlier blogs I spoke on the passage from Luke 11 where Jesus speaks to us and says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Today we hear Jesus on the other side of the door, and today He is knocking.

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20) [Read more…]

Forty Days of Prayer – Day 15

Life at many times brings forks in the road. You come to a point in your life when you are unsure of going one way or another. This happens in small and trivial things like what do I have for lunch, but more importantly in big things that change the rest of your life. That is the case in the passage below.

Pray that the LORD your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.”
(Jeremiah 42:3) [Read more…]

Forty Days of Prayer – Day 14

One of the temptations we all face is to think that we are all alone. This can happen even to people of great faith. It happened to the prophet Elijah as he speaks to God in 1 Kings chapter 19, when he says, “I am the only one left.” In prayer that can sometimes happen because often prayer is a solitary spiritual discipline. Jesus knows this pitfall and speaks to it in His prayer from John chapter 17.

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” (John 17: 20-21) [Read more…]

Forty Days of Prayer – Day 13

Some days it is easy to pray while others we never seem to find the time to pray. Some things are easy to pray for like our problems, our families, and loved ones. Then there are other things and people that are very difficult to pray for and we can find reasons to procrastinate. One of the tougher things to pray for is praying for those people you are not on good terms with, your enemies and those who mistreat you. Hear what Jesus says.

“But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” (Luke 6: 28) [Read more…]

Forty Days of Prayer – Day 12

This morning I talked in church about the Spirit helping us when we pray. In fact sometimes it is good if we pray in silence and the Spirit then speaks in groans that words cannot express. This is very powerful and the Spirit speaks to our heart in profound ways. Yet sometimes I like praying with a list. Hear this passage from Paul as he talks about all kinds of prayers for the saints, the people of God.

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” (Ephesians 6:18) [Read more…]

Forty Days of Prayer – Day 11

Sometimes you see something that is so inspiring it makes you want to shout and sing. I felt that way this morning with the Gasparilla 15K run (9.3 miles) along Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa. It was a great morning and one of my favorite activities is running along the ocean as the sun comes up in the morning. My favorite place for this is Daytona, the best beach to run on in Florida. In the Psalms there are all types of prayers and some just express joy and wonder at the world God has made. Here is one below.

Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. (Psalm 95:1-5) [Read more…]

Forty Days of Prayer – Day 10

What do you want Jesus to do for you? I can hear Jesus asking you that question. Sometimes the answer may be easy, but sometimes not. Jesus asked this question to someone who you may say why ask that question. He is blind of course he wants to see. Hear Jesus as a blind man named Bartimeus calls to Jesus.

“What do you want me to do for you?’ Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi I want to see.” “Go,” Jesus said, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road. (Mark 10: 51-52)
